PDF rendering wierdness

I was looking at a PDF earlier, and I happened to open it gpdf and evince at the same time. And I noticed quite a quality difference between the two. I then opened up xpdf to see how it looked. First, lets take a look at each one:

Evince
 Evince close-up

gpdf
 gpdf close-up

xpdf
 xpdf close-up

And a zoomed-in, side-by-side comparison
 Side-by-side comparison

Now, the fact that evince and gpdf look different isn’t all that shocking. Evince uses poppler, while gpdf, to the best of my knowledge, calls xpdf directly. What is shocking is that, of all three above, at least on my screen, gpdf looks the best. Evince and xpdf are almost identical, while gpdf looks noticeably clearer. This is especially obvious in the zoomed in comparison image above.

Now this is a bit of a problem for me since gpdf is no longer in Debian unstable. It was removed a while ago due to some security concerns and since it was no longer actively maintained. And I’m fine with that, I’m not really all that hooked on gpdf, but what can I do to make either evince or xpdf not look like crap?
