Saddam Hussein Executed
Saddam Hussein has been tried, found guilty, and executed for crimes against humanity. While I believe that, the validity of the trial notwithstanding, he is certainly guilty, I must say that the use of the death penalty is a step in the wrong direction. The Iraqi people have handed down their harshest sentence as a sovereign nation, however capital punishment is not the answer. Answering brutality with brutality will not bring any peace or resolution to the Iraqi people.
Reading through the wikipedia article on Saddam’s execution I was very happy to see details of the responses of most of the world governments regarding the execution. Nearly every country in the EU expressly denounced the death penalty while trying to remain supportive of the Iraqi people. In this great “free” country of the United States of America, one state alone (Texas) excutes 100+ people per YEAR. And yet, those “backwards” European countries all denounce it. If denouncing the murder of human beings makes me “backwards” then I’ll gladly display that title.
While this event is certainly a moment of great historical significance it is sad to see people commiting the same atrocity as Saddam Hussein on a smaller scale. Murdering a human being, regardless of how “just” it might seem, is still murder.
